Right then, we had a one-sided affair tonight but the action continues in The Hundred Men's, 2023. The London Spirit are taking on the Southern Brave on Tuesday, 8th of August. The game will begin at 11 pm IST (5.30 pm GMT). But as you know, you can always join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and cheers!
Usama Mir, the Player of the Match, is in for a chat. He starts by saying that he is quite happy with his performance. Adds that he has been working on his batting and backed himself to play proper shots. Mentions that his plan was to mix things up. Feels that it was important to keep it two-paced and is happy with how the game went. Shares that this is his first appearance in this competition and adds that he had watched the first two seasons of The Hundred on TV. Ends by saying that the support in Manchester has been great.
Time for presentations...
Earlier in the day, Manchester Originals were asked to bat first and made a decent 160 on this slowish wicket. Jos Buttler held the innings together and played a fine knock of 43 off 33. Laurie Evans, Ashton Turner, and Jamie Overton made handy contributions through the middle but it was the 14-ball 32 run cameo of Usama Mir that added impetus to the Manchester Originals innings at the backend and took them to a competitive total. Benny Howell was the standout bowler for Birmingham Phoenix but his team fell short tonight against a strong Manchester Originals side.
Tom Hartley was the pick of the bowler for Manchester Originals with 3 for 13 in his 20 ball set. Joshua Little, Usama Mir, and Richard Gleeson took two each while Paul Walter took the solitary wicket of Jamie Smith. A pretty comfortable win for the home side as they crush the Birmingham Phoenix by a huge margin at Old Trafford and jump to number two in the points table.
A top effort from Manchester Originals hands them their first win of the competition this year. Chasing 161 for the win, Birmingham Phoenix never got going in their innings and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Jamie Smith and Liam Livingstone added 34 together but apart from those two, none of the other batters got going. Liam Livingstone did threaten till the time he was in the middle but his wicket brought curtains to the Birmingham Phoenix chase. Adam Milne and Kane Richardson had some fun in the middle and stuck a few big blows but it was never going to be enough. Birmingham Phoenix end on 111 and fell short by 49 runs.
