Right then, that is it from this exciting game where Oval Invincibles opens their account for the season while London Spirit will look to come back stronger in the next game. The action continues on 3rd August, Thursday as Nothern Superchargers Women takes on Birmingham Phoneix Women at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) while in the Men's competition, the same teams go against each other. That game will start at 11 pm IST (5.30 pm GMT), but as you know you can join us early for all the build-up. Until then, goodbye and cheers!
Sunil Narine is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his all-round effort. He says that he was trying to see the ball and make contact. Adds that they did a good job with the ball in the middle and picked wickets regularly. Mentions that wickets in hand while batting makes it easy to chase down any total. Shares that this was an exciting game and luckily they came on top. Credits Nathan Sowter for his effort with the ball. Closes by saying that getting a win early helps to build the momentum going into the tournament.
Presentation Time...
Earlier in the game, London Spirit got off to a great start and were looking set to score big but they faded out throughout the innings and were bowled out for 131. Dan Lawrence, Adam Rossington and Matthew Wade were the top contributors for them while the rest of the batters couldn't do much. Nathan Sowter was the best bowler for Oval Invincibles while Sunil Narine picked up two and was also the hero with bat to get them the two points.
London Spirit were pretty good with the ball and Dan Lawrence managed his bowlers well. Daniel Worrall picked up two crucial wickets in his first three sets while Jordan Thompson got one too which made things interesting. However, they could not build on that as they let Invincibles build a couple of partnerships to take the game away from them. Just as when things were looking bleak for them Matt Critchley, Nathan Ellis, and Thompson picked up three wickets among themselves in no time to gain control again. The most important one being the dismissal of Billings at a crucial time. Ellis had 14 runs to defend in the last over but a misjudgment at the boundary by Daryl Mitchell cost them six runs which ultimately proved to be very costly as they fell to a defeat.
Oval Invincibles didn't get the start they wanted as they were reduced to 24/3 inside the Powerplay losing big guns Jason Roy and Heinrich Klaasen in the process. However, Jordan Cox and Sam Curran steadied things for them with a 47-run stand and kept them in the hunt. The former got dismissed for 22 while Curran departed for a well-made 34. After that, their skipper took the responsibility in his own hands and scored a quick-fire 25 off just 15 balls, but they suffered a mini-collapse near the end. However, Sunil Narine was cool as a cucumber in the last set to get the job done with one ball left.
Take a bow, Sunil Narine! What an absolute humdinger of a match! Oval Invincibles wins the bragging rights in this London derby and in some style as well. The pendulum swung both ways in this game but in the end, Narine showed his experience to take his side home. Huge credit goes to London Spirit as well for making a game out of this defending a not-so-big total.
