Match 7, Birmingham, August 05, 2023, 10:30 PM

Birmingham Phoenix
Trent Rockets

Match Abandoned without toss

Commentry
We have had an entire day where none of the four games have produced a result to our dismay! The action in the third edition of The Hundred Men's Competition doesn't stop though as we now move to Super Sunday where we have a doubleheader lined up on 6th August. First up, it will be Northern Superchargers taking on Southern Brave at The Rose Bowl in Southampton at 7 pm IST (1.30 pm GMT). This will be followed by a clash between Oval Invincbles and Welsh Fire at The Oval in London at 10.30 pm IST (5 pm GMT). Do join us for the build-up of both games in advance. Until then, goodbye and cheers!
UPDATE - 10.49 PM IST (5.19 pm GMT) - Sigh! The rain has prevailed yet again! The game has been CALLED OFF due to rain! The rain did ease for a bit which gave us hopes of some action but the heavens opened up again. Persistent rain and a pretty damp outfield left the match officials with no option but to abandon this game.
UPDATE - 10.41 PM IST (5.11 pm GMT) - The umpires walked out onto the field to do an inspection but had to get their umbrellas out as the drizzle is back and steady. We are in for some more delay and the wait continues. It has been a frustrating day for cricket lovers and we hope the rain gods allow us to witness some action. More updates coming soon...
UPDATE - 10.18 PM IST (4.48 pm GMT) - The drizzle is playing hide and seek with us and it does not look very promising. The Super-Soppers are in full flow trying to dry out the outfield but the mizzle is not making the job any easier. The scheduled inspection may still happen but we anticipate the umpires to have another look at a later time. We will bring you more updates soon.
UPDATE - 9.46 PM IST (4.16 pm GMT) - The latest from Edgbaston is that the rain has subsided and the ground staff are in the process of drying up the outfield. More promising signs as the umpires have scheduled an inspection for 10.30 pm IST (5.00 pm GMT). Let's hope that we have seen the last of the rain for today and we can have an entertaining contest. Stay tuned for further updates.
On the other hand, the Trent Rockets began their title defence with a narrow victory over the Southern Brave. In that game, the Rockets struggled for most of their batting effort, but Sam Hain's fighting knock took them to a respectable total. With the ball, Daniel Sams, Lewis Gregory, and Imad Wasim produced a spirited performance to successfully defend the modest total. As Lewis Gregory's men eye their second straight win, their batters will need to be required to put their hands up. Will the Trent Rockets make it two wins out of two? Or will it be the Birmingham Phoenix who register their first win? Let's find out. Toss and team news coming up shortly...
Birmingham Phoenix's opening encounter against the Northern Superchargers was abandoned due to rain, which saw both teams share a point each. In the 62 balls of play possible in that game, Ben Duckett stood out for them with the bat but found very little support from the rest. As they aim for their first win of the season, they will need other batters to step up. They have a good bowling unit that will be expected to make good use of the overcast conditions on offer.
Hello and a warm welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to our coverage of match number 7 of The Hundred, 2023, where Birmingham Phoenix will host Trent Rockets at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. The rain gods have not been kind to The Hundred, with the majority of the games being rain-affected. Earlier in the day, the women's fixture at this very venue was abandoned due to rain, but let's keep our fingers crossed and hope that this game does not suffer the same fate.
... MATCH DAY ...
The defending champions, Trent Rockets made a brilliant start to this campaign winning a close encounter against Southern Brave. They will now take on Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston who had to share the points as their first game was washed out due to rain, but before the rain came, they were in a difficult situation and can count themselves lucky to even get that point. Their only positive was Ben Duckett who continued his Ashes' form and they will be further bolstered by the return of Liam Livingstone who has been the key performer for them while Moeen Ali is likely to be back as well after both of these players missed the first match due to a slight injury. Their bowling attack is a solid one with Kane Richardson and Tom Helm who took 13 and 14 wickets respectively last season and were two of the top bowlers. Ali and Shadab Khan are the frontline spinners who can use their experience of playing all around the world to challenge the opposition. Trent Rockets, on the other hand, will be riding high on confidence after that win where Sam Hain scored a match-winning half-century. They have a star-studded batting line-up with a powerful opening duo of Dawid Malan and Alex Hales while Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Colin Munro make up a strong middle order. Rockets are spoilt for choice in the bowling department where their skipper Lewis Gregory led them from the front with Daniel Sams who shared six wickets equally in the first game and will be crucial again but they also have Sam Cook who has 11 wickets in his last seven games, and Imad Wasim who is known for bowling important spells upfront. They will hope to continue the winning momentum and make it two in two while Phoenix will look for their first victory of the season. Let's see who comes out on top.
