$730m funding for Tasmania’s Mersey Community Hospital

Former Prime Minister John Howard announced the original deal during the 2007 election campaign.

The Australian government has declared $730 million in subsidy for Mersey Community Hospital Tasmania.

Ahead of an official visit to the Latrobe facility, the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Tasmania Premier Will Hodgman declared particulars of the new contract between the state and the commonwealth. According to the latest news updates, the Australian government has declared $730 million in subsidy. So they are paying $730 million to the Tasmanian Government.

Former Prime Minister John Howard announced the original deal during the 2007 election campaign. The deal was making the hospital the only one in the country directly funded from Commonwealth coffers.

Current Prime Minister Turnbull said the hospital was the heart of the community. And it had employed generations over the years. He further added that there have been many doubts over the future of the hospital for a long time. And we have brought all that to an end. He said further this. So we are paying $730 million to the Tasmanian Government. We are paying to secure the future of this hospital. And this funding for this hospital for the next decade.

Proprietorship of the Mersey Community-Hospital will be given to the state government from 1st July, with $730 million funding from the federal government so Tasmania can run the hospital for the coming decade.

While they said the Mersey community hospital will then work in a similar way as other public hospitals.

According to the news updates, Australian Malcolm Turnbull said the contract delivered long-term certainty to the hospital’s 470 patients and staff.
